Apocalypto (2006)

Mel Gibson has a unique and compelling vision and he knows how to bring it to vivid and ferocious cinematic life. “Apocalypto,” directed byGibson based on a script he co-wrote with Farhad Safinia, is a masterful recreation of pre-Columbian America set during the final days of the Mayan civilization. The film is cast predominantly with indigenous people, none of whom are big names, but who look and play their parts convincingly and succeed in delivering strong, emotionally engaging performances thanks in part to superb casting by Carla Hool. To lend authenticity to the proceedings, the only language spoken is Yucatec Maya (the surviving dialect of the Mesoamericans and what is spoken today in the Yucatan Peninsula) with English subtitles. The film is visually stunning and the frequently bloody, brutal action is extraordinarily well staged.Gibson takes full advantage of the latest technology available to craft his film.

The story begins in the middle of the jungle in a lush, idyllic setting that resembles the Garden of Eden as warriors hunt a wild boar. But from the very beginning you have this unsettling feeling that their peaceful existence won’t last for long. Your instincts are proven correct when an emaciated tribe appears unexpectedly, interrupting the hunters as they feast on their prey. Uprooted and obviously seeking safety, they ask permission to pass through. Jaguar Paw (a well cast Rudy Youngblood who is a Comanche and Cree Indian from Texas) is immediately suspicious, but his wise father cautions him not to allow his fears to consume his thoughts and get the better of him – advice which proves absolutely invaluable later on in the story.

Jaguar Paw’s world is abruptly turned upside down shortly afterwards when his village is violently attacked early one morning by Mayan Holcane warriors in search of human sacrifices to placate their gods and end an ongoing drought. His young wife, the beautiful Seven (Dalia Hernandez), and the mother of their young son, Turtles Run (Carlos Emilio Baez), is very pregnant. Their relationship is filled with love, affection and playfulness until their paradise is abruptly destroyed by extraordinary ruthlessness and violence. As his village is literally being razed, the resourcefulJaguar Paw hides his family hurriedly in a nearby pit before he is taken captive and forced to embark on a treacherous death march to a distant Mayan city. Leading the early morning raid and later chasingJaguar Paw after he escapes is Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo), who is both a strong, respected leader and a complex villain who will not stop untilJaguar Paw is dead. The uniquely photogenic cast also includes Rodolfo Palacios, Jonathan Brewer, Morris Birdyellowhead, Ramirez Amilcar, Israel Contreras, Israel Rios, and Maria Isabel Diaz, among many others.
